WHY Crossing The FINISH LINE Changes you!

Posted by on May 15, 2017 at 2:00 pm

GF_2016_FinishlineThe number one reason people will consult with a trainer is to help them lose weight. I like to take a different approach to weight loss. Let me explain.

Many people take this approach – ‘As soon as I lose the weight or get fit, then I’ll start doing the things I’ve always wanted to do”. But I like to take the opposite approach.

First, set the goal and in the process of training for the event or activity you’ve always wanted to do, you lose the weight and get fit!

And it’s such a positive, motivating focus. For example, let’s say you set a goal of finishing a 5km fun run. Setting this kind of goal, because it has a deadline, provides a compelling reason to stick to the program and not miss workouts. In contrast, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds in 2 months, if you get off track, you can negotiate with yourself and say, “Well, I guess I can wait an additional week or two to achieve my goals.”  But if you get off track with your training program while preparing for an event, you can’t call a race organizer and ask them to postpone the event because you aren’t going to be ready. You will realize that every workout or skipped workout will either positively or negatively affect your performance and your ability to achieve your goal.

SherriHI_2015Close out the year as you plan for the next. 2016 will be the year where you create your dream year!

As we wind down the year, it’s a great opportunity to reflect on the last 12 months.

Recap

It’s a great drill to grab a piece of paper and answer the following questions:

  1. What are the highlights of the last year?
  2. What were the struggles of the last year?
  3. What do you wish you would have done that you did not? What opportunities did you not act on that you wish you would have?

Fix That Flat and Keep Going!

Sherri Bike ColumbiaSocial media lit up after Halloween with people confessing to indulging in one too many Halloween mini-chocolates or too many festive cocktails at the SPOOKtacular parties. We all get off track at various times of the year, especially during the holidays when we are celebrating at social get-togethers.The key to long-term success is how quickly we get back on track!

One of the best things we can do after we indulge is immediately workout and sweat out all those toxins!

It will reset your body and your mind and keep you focused on your goals. Many people attempt goals but it seems like the ones who actually achieve them are those that keep going no matter how many times they fail or fall off track.  Perseverance is one of the keys to success at any initiative.

The January Fitness Rush

Posted by on January 30, 2015 at 11:00 am

Here are some typical questions that a lot of people have during the January Fitness Rush:

1888584_10151868006186946_936215147_nMy husband and I started a workout program and he is losing so much more fat than I am. We seem to be doing the same amount of exercise and both eating well, but the fat is just falling off him.  What am I doing wrong?  J.C, Vancouver, WA

You’re not doing anything wrong. Men just have it a little easier than women. For one reason, men have a lot more muscle mass than women. Since fat is burned inside of muscle tissue, once they start exercising they become a better fat burning machine.  Secondly, men store the majority of their fat in their abdominal region which has the capacity to turn over and be burned more easily. Women store more fat in their hips and thighs which is more resistant to change.  Keep plugging away and try not to compare yourself to your husband’s results. You’re doing a great thing for yourself and your relationship.

I’ve lost 20 pounds but I’m having such a hard time losing the last 10 pounds. What can I do to get over this plateau?  J.C., Vancouver, WA

You’ll want to do whatever you can to increase your metabolism so that you burn more calories at rest and during exercise. One way to accomplish this is to develop more muscle. Muscle is where fat is burned so the more muscle you have on your body, the easier it is to lose weight.  Be sure to participate in resistance training two to three days per week.  Another way to rev your metabolism is to eat more. New Year, New YOU!

Posted by on December 30, 2014 at 8:42 pm

Set-a-goal-make-a-plan-get-to-work-stick-to-it-reach-a-goalAt this time of year, many of us will resolve to make some major changes in our lives.  Maybe we’ll decide to start an exercise program, stop eating junk food, quit smoking or lose a substantial amount of weight.  Regardless of the goal, have you ever wondered why most people set the same New Year’s Resolutions year after year?  That’s because by March 1st, 80% of people have thrown in the towel on their original ambitions.  With that kind of failure rate, I’m convinced that it’s not a problem with the person but rather the process.  Most people set themselves up for failure before the clock even strikes midnight because they attempt to do too much too quickly.  They don’t do any planning and they have no idea how to monitor their progress.  When it comes to health and fitness, your chances for success will improve dramatically if you approach things differently.
