Working Out When There is Fire All Around

Published on September 11, 2017 By Sherri

With the recent fires in the Gorge and throughout the Northwest, it feels like we are surrounded by smoke and fires. Many have questioned whether it’s still okay to exercise outdoors with smoke in the air.

The Environmental Proection Agency (EPA) has created the Air Quality Index (AQI) to answer that question. This index can tell us how clean or polluted our air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern. It measures particles in the air, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ground level ozone.

AQI is measured from 0 to 500, with the higher the AQI number, the greater the level of air pollution and greater health concerns. Read more on Working Out When There is Fire All Around…

How Do You Make Exercise Fun?!

Published on July 24, 2017 By Sherri

Most people think exercise is a chore and can’t wait until it’s over. Others can’t even find the motivation to get started and wonder how others can find any joy in Running, Bootcamps or Yoga.

The key to sticking to any fitness program is finding an activity that you enjoy enough to do regularly – that means months and years after you originally set your goals, you’re still going at it.

When deciding whether an activity is the right one for you ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • Do I find the activity pleasurable? Do I like it?  Is it a lot of fun? Does it make me happy?
  • Am I interested in the activity? Is it stimulating?
  • Do I get absorbed in the activity?
  • Do I feel energized during or after the activity? Is it invigorating? Is it refreshing?
  • Does the activity give me a sense of accomplishment? Is it gratifying?

…..focus on the staple movements, those that give you the biggest bang for your buck, you can get a lot more done in less time.

Movements that are compound, integrated, multi-muscle, and multi-joint such as squats, lunges, pull-ups, push ups etc. will allow you to continue with great progress even when your workout duration or frequency is reduced over the summer. Toning and conditioning muscles — adding order to your workouts

Published on May 2, 2017 By Sherri

Last week we reviewed a technique for ordering your workouts that provides a very user-friendly way for anyone to design and experience a full body muscle and cardio workout. The response has been great so today, we decided to review some other important guidelines so you can assure each of your muscle conditioning workouts is super effective.

Large Before Small

stabilityballbenchpressb(2)First off, the textbook correct way to train your muscles is to start with the larger muscle groups first and then finish with the smaller muscle groups. This means, for example, for your upper body you would perform all your back and chest exercises first, then finish with the shoulders, biceps and triceps. Basically, you would do all your full body, integrated movements first and then you can focus on isolating smaller muscle groups. If you don’t’ have a ton of time, focus on those compound movements like squats, lunges, rows, pulls, presses and pushes, because they use your large muscles as your primary movers and your smaller muscle groups still work to assist so you get the most bang for your buck!
